This is the official website for the city of Herreid, South Dakota.
Herreid was founded as a village on August 26, 1901, with the official plat being recorded on Sept. 13, 1901. While some wanted to call the village “Campa” many of the first settlers did not like the name and began to consider others.
Charles Nelson Herreid became South Dakota’s fourth (4th) Governor on Jan. 1, 1901, so they decided to name the town “Herreid” to honor the distinguished citizen.
Through fires, floods & disease, Herreid has prevailed and has recently attracted several new businesses, while watching the expansion of others. A brand-new playground, a newly renovated swimming pool, a new 4-plex condo unit, and several new homes have also been a welcome addition to our community.
Located on Hwy 83 only 7 miles from the North Dakota state line, Herreid offers convenient access to cities like Bismarck, Aberdeen, Pierre, and Mobridge.
With a quality K-12 school system, swimming pool, roller skating rink, fitness center, library, parks, campgrounds, rodeo grounds, housing for hunters, and an assisted living facility, there’s something for everyone in Herreid! Herreid also offers a Skilled Trades Incentive Program for carpenters, electricians, plumbers and concrete finishers, etc.! Stop by and see everything this progressive small town has to offer!
